Canada hit by earthquake aftershock

 

The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 6.2 earthquake recorded off the west coast of Canada today is an aftershock of the magnitude 7.7 quake that struck on Sunday.

A geophysicist says the agency had no immediate reports that the latest quake caused any significant damage or was widely felt.

The National Weather Service West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center said the Monday night quake was not expected to generate a tsunami.

USGS geophysicist Susan Hoover in Golden, Colorado, says an even larger aftershock - a magnitude 6.3 quake - was recorded on Sunday in the same general area off British Columbia's Queen Charlotte Islands.

Since the 7.7 quake, Hoover says nearly 80 quakes registering magnitude 4.0 or higher have been recorded in the area.

DOMA Ruled Unconstitutional By Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Setting Up Final Showdown at the Supreme Court

 

“Last Week, in a 2-1 decision in the case ofWindsor v. United States, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) is unconstitutional because it violates the equal protection guarantee of the Fifth Amendment.  The Court’s decision was written by Dennis Jacobs, Chief Judge of the Second Circuit, a conservative jurist appointed to the bench by President George H. W. Bush in 1992.  The Second Circuit ruling is the 8th consecutive ruling striking down DOMA since July 2010, and it is the second such ruling from a federal court of appeals. (The First Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on May 31, 2012 that DOMA is unconstitutional.)

The ruling in Windsor is likely to be the last appeals court decision on DOMA before the U.S. Supreme Court announces later this year that it will formally agrre to review the constitutionality of this law  by accepting one or more challenges to DOMA now pending before the high court.

Importantly, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals not only found that DOMA was unconstitutional, it also determined that a heightened level of scrutiny must be applied to any law that discriminates against LGBT persons. That means, that in the Second Circuit, any provision of law that treats LGBT people unequally must be presumed to be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court may adopt the same standard when it takes up one or more of the pending challenges to DOMA next year (including Windsor) and decides the issue once and for all.

Last week’s victory over DOMA in the Second Circuit is historic, unprecedented and of such critical, far-reaching, potential legal significance that its full impact is hard to measure. But it is first and foremost a victory for an inspring, courageous, and determined DOMA Warrior, 83-year-old Edith (Edie) Windsor.

Edie and her wife, Thea Spyer, were married in Canada in 2007 after lmore than forty years together as a couple in New York. In 2009, when Thea passed away, the Internal Revenue Service, citing DOMA, denied recognition of their marriage and refused apply the marital deduction that protects surviving spouses from estate tax. Instead the IRS forced Edie to pay a $363,000 tax bill on Thea’s estate. Not only was she contending with the loss of her life-partner, but she was, in fact, being told that the life they had built together meant nothing to the government; to the IRS, it was as though it never happened. It is often so difficult for couples to quantify the heartache, the pain, and the hurt that a law like DOMA causes. Windsor v. United States leaves no question as to a very specific harm DOMA caused to Edie. Edie Windsor is not only a litigant, however; for years, she has demonstrated throught her advocacy that our most powerful tools are the storiesof our own lives. Edie’s belief that we must all be treated with dignity and respect was the reason for her lawsuit, and it is the reason that we, as binational couples, continue to fight DOMA by demanding nothing less, every day. What she accomplished in court last week is valuable to the LGBT movement in a way that defies any measure in dollars and cents.

As a grassroots campaign, The DOMA Project focuses on DOMA’s devastating impact on binational gay and lesbian couples who are denied access to green cards and all other vital family unification provisions of our immigration law, e.g. fiancé(e) visas, waivers for unlawful presence bars, stepchildren petitions, derivative non-immigrant status, status as spouses of refugees, spouses of green card lottery winners, etc. solely because of DOMA.  Each day that DOMA remains the law of the land, it forces gay couples couples into exile, separates couples from each other and from their children, and forces spouses and partners of U.S. citizens to remain in the United States without lawful immigration status, all with devastating effects not only on LGBT families and on our marriages, but also on our extended American families, our communities, our businesses, our friends and our own dreams for the future.

DOMA is tearing apart our families, and while every court ruling helps us build the foundation for its demise, we should not lose sight of the fact that federal courts are not the only, or even the primary forum, for our fight. We must keep up the momentum by continuing to focus our advocacy of the harmful consequences of DOMA, and on the policies that must be implemented now to counter those consequences. We cannot become complacent and simply trust that DOMA will ultimately be struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court. If we adopt such a passive approach, we are gambling, in a sense, with our marriages, our families and our futures. Instead, we must continue to help build a receptive climate for the powerful cases against DOMA by exposing the truth of what it is doing every day to our families. All of us can play a part if we choose to be a part of this fight to the finish line.  We all have too much at stake to simply sit back and watch events unfold.

The DOMA Project continues to work to empower binational couples and fight for immediate remedial policies to prevent the catastrophic, destructive impact DOMA is having on our families.

Like Edie Windsor, we will continue to fight for a federal government that no longer disrespects the love and commitment that same-sex couples have made to one another, where couples are no longer forced to choose between their love and their country, where LGBT families are not torn apart or forced into exile.

In his decision, Chief Judge Jacobs notes that the final decision on the constitutionality of DOMA, which discriminates against all same-sex couples by prohibiting the federal government from recognizing our marriages, “will have a considerable impact on many operations of the United States.”

Indeed, DOMA is not an abstraction; as the Windsor case reminds all, its consequences are devastating: our families are harmed every day by this law, often irreparably.  As such, while we celebrate every ruling as another nail in the coffin, we continue to fight to end the consequences of DOMA today.  There can be no waiting in the fight for full equality.  The slow and complex litigation will continue with a constant drumbeat of speculation as we near a final judicial resolution of DOMA, while tens of thousands of binational couples will struggle to make it through another day, trying to hold their marriages and their families together. As we celebrate last week’s tremendous victory, we cannot forget that there are remedies available to the government to protect and reunite all lesbian and gay binational couples and their families today. We will continue to fight to stop every deportation, separation and exile of binational couples.

To achieve immediate policy solutions it is important not to find oneself passively waiting for another court ruling, but rather to join other binational couples in active engagement and participation in our campaign. Over the the next eight months, our country will focus increasingly on this issue, and its expected resolution by the Supreme Court by June 2013.  But that should not become a distraction for binational couples eager to fight for immediate executive branch policies that will keep our families together now.

There is one court in which all of us dwell and that is the court of public opinion. We must continue to score victories in the court of public opinion in order to reach our goal of full equality. Edie has shown us how our own lived experiences, shared with a wide audience in compelling and personal terms, served to persuade of even the most conservative jurist. For her, and all the courageous men and women who have come before us and who have made our fight possible, let us never waver in our determination to achieve full equality.”

Kimberley Walsh: Desmente que Girls Aloud vá se separar após a turnê comemorativa

 

A cantora Kimberley Walsh desmentiu a informação de que o retorno do Girls Aloud já tenha data para terminar. Em entrevista ao programa “Newsbeat”, ela disse que a girlband “nunca se separará definitivamente” e que é mentira que o grupo seria desfeito após a turnê comemorativa de 2013.

A declaração contraria o que a integrante Cheryl escreveu em sua autobiografia, na qual afirmou que o reencontro para celebrar os 10 anos de formação do grupo seria o último trabalho do Girls Aloud. “Não acho que nenhuma de nós saiba o que acontecerá depois da turnê. Isso é o mais distante que planejamos”, contou.

Questionada especificamente sobre a afirmação de Cheryl no livro, Walsh desconversa, dizendo que a cantora escreveu aquilo há muito tempo. “Ela obviamente escreveu antes de qualquer música, antes que nós nos reencontrássemos”, explicou.

O grupo britânico The Saturdays continua nos EUA para tentar emplacar sua carreira internacional. Para isso, a girlband está contando com o apoio do produtor Rodney Jerkins, mais conhecido como Darkchild. Ele é o responsável, entre outros, pelo hit “Telephone”, da Lady Gaga e da Beyoncé.

O quinteto está trabalhando com o produtor em material inédito. A revelação foi feita pela conta do grupo no Twitter, com a seguinte mensagem: “Não podemos acreditar que estamos em estúdio com a lenda que é Rodney Jerkins!! Gravando uma música muito pop para vocês todos”, escreveu.

A gravação é para o quarto álbum do The Saturdays, que visa ser lançado no mercado norte-americano no ano que vem, simultaneamente a um reality show para o canal E!

James Blunt: Após vender 18 milhões de CDs no mundo, cantor anuncia aposentadoria

O cantor James Blunt, que vendeu 18 milhões de CDs em todo o mundo, não quer mais saber de música. Ele decidiu se aposentar e fez a revelação para o jornal Daily Mail. “Não tenho planos de compor. Estive aproveitando que terminei minha turnê mundial e passei muito tempo em Ibiza. Quero tirar um tempo pra mim”, declarou.

A pausa não tem previsão de término e, por ele, está ótimo assim. O cantor de 38 anos e uma discografia de três álbuns de estúdio (“Back to Bedlam”, “All the Lost Souls” e “Some Kind of Trouble”) não quer saber de voltar à indústria musical. “Eu gosto de uma boa noite de diversao”, apontou sua preferência.

A última turnê do James Blunt, o eterno cantor de “You’re Beautiful”, passou pelo Brasil em janeiro, com shows em Porto Alegre, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro e Belo Horizonte.

Produtor anuncia novo reality show para formar girlband tipo Rouge

 

Após uma serie de rumores, o produtor Rick Bonadio confirmou, nesta sexta (19/10), os planos para formar uma nova girlband brasileira, nos moldes do grupo Rouge e Spice Girls, com cinco integrantes. “Aqui está a novidade que prometi”, twittou.

A seleção para as integrantes do novo grupo seguirá o exemplo do programa “Popstars” e será televisionada por um canal de TV pago. As inscrições serão abertas em breve e só poderão participar mulheres entre 18 e 25 anos.

Além disso, Rick Bonadio também está envolvido com o reencontro do próprio Rouge. A girlband, formada no SBT, também tem planos de fazer um show de despedida, que não foi possível quando o grupo chegou ao fim em 2006.

Karin Hils anuncia gravação de música nova e de reality show do Rouge, além de show de despedida

 

A cantora e atriz Karin Hils revelou, em entrevista à revista Caras, os detalhes do reencontro do grupo Rouge. O quarteto – sem Luciana Andrade – se reencontrará para a gravação de um reality show e de uma música nova, além de fazer um show de despedida. “O Rouge não vai voltar, mas vai celebrar o sucesso desta história que foi linda”, explicou.

 

Segundo ela, o convite partiu do produtor Rick Bonadio, que está em contato com os donos da marca Rouge e dos direitos autorais das músicas para viabilizar o reencontro. “Ele me fez uma proposta para participar de um reality show do Multishow, que irá acompanhar artistas no estúdio de gravação. Ele queria o Rouge e eu embarquei na ideia. Nem começamos a compor. Isso tudo vai acontecer durante as gravações”, contou.

Ela, Lissah Martins e Aline Wirley tem feito reuniões em São Paulo, com a participação da Fantine Thó pelo skype, já que ela mora na Holanda. A ideia é se despedir definitivamente do público do Rouge, que sempre pediu por uma última turnê. “Não conseguimos dizer tchau para nosso público, achei que seria justo e o Rick adorou”, disse.

Sobre a ausência da Luciana Andrade, que está em carreira solo, Karin garante que o convite foi feito, mas rejeitado. “A Luciana nunca se identificou com as nossas músicas e ela continua não se identificando. A gente sempre respeitou esta posição dela”, afirmou.

O suposto retorno do Rouge, levou a integrante Aline Wirley a reativar sua conta no Twitter. Para comemorar as boas notícias, ela postou uma foto em que aparece dentro de um carro com Karin Hills e Lissah Martins (antes conhecida como Patrícia Lissah):

Na legenda da foto, ela escreveu “Amigas unidas jamais serão vencidas!!!”. Depois, a cantora, que se dedicou a musicais teatrais nos últimos anos, twittou: “Queridos, agora realmente voltei para o Twitter. Adorooo. Sejam bem vindos!”.

The Walking Dead poderá ter 7 temporadas

 

The Walking Dead retornou ontem (14 de outubro) na AMC, e chega amanha (16 de outubro) no Canal Fox. As coisas estão mais agitadas do que nunca para Rick e seu grupo.

Em uma conversa com o site Daily Dead, a produtora da série Gale Anne Hurd abriu o jogo sobre quanto tempo ela sente que a série deve continuar no ar.

Gale sabe os rumos que as histórias em quadrinhos vão seguir, e quais explorar na série de TV. “Há mais do que o suficiente nas HQs para continuar a série. Há tanto material rico, tantas situações diferentes e tantos personagens fantásticos para se juntarem ao grupo dos sobreviventes. Eu acho que nessa história não há limite! Assim como não há limites para as histórias em quadrinhos de Robert Kirkman”.

No entanto, antes de qualquer pulo de alegria dos fãs da série The Walking Dead por conta do comentário “nessa história não há limites” de Gale, deve-se lembrar que o produtor executivo da série, Glenn Mazzara, afirmou antes que, apesar do material de Kirkman ser mutio rico em histórias, ele tem um final planejado para a série.

Como qualquer programa de televisão, The Walking Dead só pode durar por um certo tempo. Sete temporadas. Esse é o número que o produtor Glenn Mazzara vê a série alcançando. Ou seja, para ele, sete temporadas seria o mínimo.

Lembrando que esses são apenas os planos dos produtores da série, mas quem dá o sinal verde para renovação são os produtores executivos da AMC, e não os produtores executivos de The Walking Dead, especificamente.

Horas após o anúncio do título "Unapologetic" e da divulgação da capa do seu novo álbum, Rihanna convoca os fãs para o lançamento de um site totalmente interativo  e que deve premiar os membros da Rihanna Navy.

P!NK RELEASES MUSIC VIDEO FOR “TRY”

 

I’ve always considered myself more a fan of P!nk herself than her music — since breaking on the scene in 2000, she has always seemed to carry herself with a strength and sense of self that I could admire, but I’ve never delved deeper into her catalog than what I’ve heard on the radio. However, after watching the video for “Try,” the second single off P!nk’s recently released seventh studio album, The Truth About Love, that may have to change.

Directed by Floria Sigismondi (The Cure) and choreographed by The Golden Boyz RJ Durell and Nick Florez (Madonna, Zumanity) along with stunt/aerial choreographer and P!nk’s trapeze partner Sebastien Stella (Water For Elephants), the video is absolutely stunning. It features P!nk and a male counterpart, New York dancer Colt Prattes, engaged in an interpretation of the Apache Dance, an aggressive yet graceful give-and-take that ranges in tone from violent to sexual to everything in between.

P!nk has stated that, “Making this video was the most fun I’ve ever had in my entire career. I never wanted it to end. It’s my favorite video ever,” and I can definitely see why. It’s like a two-person Cirque du Soleil performance, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen P!nk look more beautiful than she does in this video, covered in multi-colored dust and putting those enviable abs to the test.
