New York Allows Same-Sex Marriage, Becoming Largest State to Pass Law

ALBANY — Lawmakers voted late Friday to legalize same-sex marriage, making New York the largest state where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed and giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born.

“I apologize for those who feel offended,” Mr. Grisanti said, adding, “I cannot deny a person, a human being, a taxpayer, a worker, the people of my district and across this state, the State of New York, and those people who make this the great state that it is the same rights that I have with my wife.”
Senate approval was the final hurdle for the same-sex marriage legislation, which was approved last week by the Assembly. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo signed the measure at 11:55 p.m., and the law will go into effect in 30 days, meaning that same-sex couples could begin marrying in New York by late July.
Passage of same-sex marriage here followed a daunting run of defeats in other states where voters barred same-sex marriage by legislative action, constitutional amendment or referendum. Just five states currently permit same-sex marriage: Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.
At around 10:30 p.m., moments after the vote was announced, Mr. Cuomo strode onto the Senate floor to wave at cheering supporters who had crowded into the galleries to watch. Trailed by two of his daughters, the governor greeted lawmakers, and paused to single out those Republicans who had defied the majority of their party to support the marriage bill.
“How do you feel?” he asked Senator James S. Alesi, a suburban Rochester Republican who voted against the measure in 2009 and was the first to break party ranks this year. “Feels good, doesn’t it?”
The approval of same-sex marriage represented a reversal of fortune for gay-rights advocates, who just two years ago suffered a humiliating defeat when a same-sex marriage bill was easily rejected by the Senate, which was then controlled by Democrats. This year, with the Senate controlled by Republicans, the odds against passage of same-sex marriage appeared long.
But the unexpected victory had a clear champion: Mr. Cuomo, a Democrat who pledged last year to support same-sex marriage but whose early months in office were dominated by intense battles with lawmakers and some labor unions over spending cuts.
Mr. Cuomo made same-sex marriage one of his top priorities for the year and deployed his top aide to coordinate the efforts of a half-dozen local gay-rights organizations whose feuding and disorganization had in part been blamed for the defeat two years ago.
The new coalition of same-sex marriage supporters brought in one of Mr. Cuomo’s trusted campaign operatives to supervise a $3 million television and radio campaign aimed at persuading several Republican and Democratic senators to drop their opposition.
For Senate Republicans, even bringing the measure to the floor was a freighted decision. Most of the Republicans firmly oppose same-sex marriage on moral grounds, and many of them also had political concerns, fearing that allowing same-sex marriage to pass on their watch would embitter conservative voters and cost the Republicans their one-seat majority in the Senate.
Leaders of the state’s Conservative Party, whose support many Republican lawmakers depend on to win election, warned that they would oppose in legislative elections next year any Republican senator who voted for same-sex marriage.
But after days of contentious discussion capped by a marathon nine-hour closed-door debate on Friday, Republicans came to a fateful decision: The full Senate would be allowed to vote on the bill, the majority leader, Dean G. Skelos, said Friday afternoon, and each member would be left to vote according to his or her conscience

N.Y. Senate puts off marriage vote

The New York Senate will not vote on a pending marriage equality bill until Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican leaders agree on language impacting religious entities, according to reports today.  It’s now unlikely the bill will see a vote before Monday, the day the current legislative session is due to end.
Earlier today the Roman Catholic Archbishop of New York, Timothy M. Dolan, made clear his objection to the legislation no matter what religious exemptions are included.  ”It’s not a done deal. There is a good chance that this is not going to pass this year,” Dolan said on the phone to a radio show.
N.Y. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos told reporters today he believed the governor was negotiating in good faith so a majority of senators could feel comfortable that religious organizations would not face litigation for refusing to serve same-sex married couples.

Girls Aloud are set to return to the studio in January 2012.

The 'Call the Shots' group are "itching" to end the hiatus they started in 2009, which has seen all five members pursue different careers, including releasing solo records, acting, TV presenting and launching a make-up line, after members Cheryl Cole and Nadine Coyle bonded over the phone.

Both Nadine and Cheryl have had to deal with turmoil in their personal lives over the last month, with the former ending her engagement to NFL player Jason Bell and the latter being dropped from TV Show 'The X Factor'.

A source told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "They're excited they're going to be making a fresh start together on this next adventure of their lives.

"In six months time it'll be back to work as normal - they are itching to get back in the studio."

The girl band, who also include Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, are now searching for new producers to make hits for them on their next album, after they parted company with the songwriting and production team Xenomania who they have worked with on all their previous albums.

The source added: "At the moment the girls are really excited about their new beginning, although they are scratching their heads over who will create signature hits for them.

"They are all grown women now. Cheryl has been through a lot worse than US 'X Factor'. She's survived a marriage breakdown and almost died of malaria. She's made of tougher stuff."

'X Factor' judge Louis Walsh recently revealed Cheryl is set to rejoin her bandmates.

He told BANG Showbiz: "She's getting back with Girls Aloud in 2012 and they're going to tour."

Now Its Official: Cheryl Cole is out of U.S. X-Factor

British singer Cheryl Cole's replacement on the much-hyped U.S. version of "The X Factor" was confirmed on Monday, ending almost two weeks of rumor and speculation about the line-up.
But sources close to the singing contest denied that Cole was dumped because of problems with her strong Northern English accent, or that the last minute changes were an elaborate PR stunt ahead of the show's debut on Fox television in the fall. Instead, the problem was Cole lacked personality, the sources said.
"Cheryl's accent was not the issue. I can assure you, it is not a stunt. You would have to be a PR genius, or nightmare, to think it was a stunt," one person involved in negotiations told Reuters on Monday.
"The X Factor", created by British entrepreneur Simon Cowell, is the highlight of Fox television's upcoming fall television schedule.
Cole, who was Cowell's personal choice for the panel, will be replaced by Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger, who was previously announced as the co-host of the show, Fox television and Cowell's production company said in a brief statement on Monday.
Cole was also dropped last week from the British version of "The X Factor" -- Britain's most-watched TV show.
Cole, a singer with the group Girls Aloud, is a household name in Britain but unknown in the United States. She had already filmed two audition episodes of "The X Factor", along with Cowell, former "American Idol" judge Paula Abdul and record producer Antonio "L.A." Reid.
Cole's role in those auditions will not be cut when the show airs, but producers have not yet decided how to explain her brief appearance to U.S. viewers, the sources said.
"It is a reality series. It will have to be explained but she will not be edited," said one source, who did not wish to be named.
British and U.S. media reports have speculated that the bubbly Cole was dropped because of fears that U.S. viewers would have difficulty understanding her accent.
But a source close to the show said the problem was one of chemistry and personality -- or the lack of it.
"She wasn't herself. After four days of filming, she wasn't what the producers had expected," the source said.
Discussions continued over the weekend in a bid to find Cole some other role on the U.S. show. Cowell's publicist Max Clifford told Britain's Sky News on Sunday that Cowell was pushing hard to keep Cole around.
But with the next round of auditions in front of judges scheduled for New Jersey on Wednesday, Cole apparently no longer wanted to be involved in any capacity, the source said.
The Hollywood Reporter said producers had agreed to pay Cole the reported $1.5 million she was owed under her contract.
The British media has branded the ongoing uncertainty over Cole's participation as "farcical", with some suggesting it was a stunt to raise Cole's profile in the United States.
But there is more at stake in the United States than Cole's career for "The X Factor", which is launching in a crowded field of TV talent shows.
Some U.S. TV critics feel the "X Factor" celebrity line-up has already been outshone by Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine and country music's Blake Shelton on new NBC rival "The Voice".
